Coonamble Youth Empowerment Program

The Coonamble Youth Empowerment Program is a capacity building project for the young people of Coonamble Shire, based on a successful global initiative.

It builds capacity through a focus on inner self growth and outer participation in activities that improves the local community.  It encourages families and the community to create an environment in which young people can flourish and contribute purposefully.

There are two streams to the project, for different age groups:

  1. Junior Youth Stream, best suited to 11 to 14-year-olds (those in Years 6 to 9); register here.
  2. The Youth Champions Stream, best suited for youth aged 15 and upwards; register here.

The first intake will be offered from mid-February, after school hours and/or on weekends.

To register, a parent or guardian is welcome to complete the form for those under 18 years of age.

What happens in a Junior Youth Group?

Between 10 and 15 young people come together as a Junior Youth Group, with the supervision of a facilitator, to:

  • Learn from the stories of other youth from around the world as they too try to deal with the challenges in their daily life. The youth will improve their powers of expression and decision making that will lead to positive outcomes for themselves, their families and their community.
  • Cultivate their expression using arts and crafts.
  • Keep active through sporting activities and cooperative games.
  • Put their improved expression and decision-making into effect by planning and carrying out small service projects within the community.
It is expected that each Junior Youth Group will meet twice a week after school and/or on the weekend, with each session lasting between 2 and 3 hours. The young people and their families will be consulted to determine what works best for each intake.

What happens in the Youth Champions Group?

Between 10 and 15 older youth come together as a group to champion the youth of Coonamble.

As a Youth Champion, you can expect to develop:

  • Qualities, attitudes and skills needed to help serve and lead as part of your training.
  • Work and life skills to improve your employability and contribution to the community.
  • Ability to analyse the needs of the community, and how to best serve it, and
  • Ability to guide a Junior Youth Group through their program, with the help of an experienced facilitator.

A Youth Champion proactively contributes to the development of a new generation of conscious, compassionate and confident young people who will themselves become the future leaders of the community.

Any young person or parent interested in learning more about the program is welcome to call David at Council on (02) 6827 1900.
